Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Olympic Torch Relay Sponsorship Drives Gold Medal Results For Coca-Cola Canada

Coca-Cola Canada has been successful in leveraging its sponsorship of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Olympic Torch Relay to drive growth. At the core of this achievement is sustainability – not only of the business results, but of how they were achieved – to leave a lasting legacy for all Canadians.

The Facts: Coca-Cola Canada Vancouver Olympic Achievements

Business Results

  • Dramatic market share growth YTD after a full year of share growth - Total beverages including sparkling
  • 1 million perfectly-served Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero beverages in commemorative aluminum bottles sampled along the Olympic Torch Relay, and 1 million sold through customer programs
  • 3.7 million perfectly-served cold Coca-Cola beverages at the Olympic Games
  • 200,000 Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero sampled at the Happiness House Live Site
  • 3.7 million Far Coast brand hot beverages served
  • Activated Olympics with over ten major customers

Sustainability

  • First-ever carbon- and waste-neutral Olympic Games
    • 100% of all bottles collected for recycling during Olympic Torch Relay and Olympic Games
    • Coca-Cola green teams activated in 172 communities – totaling 1,250 community volunteers – collected  PET containers on Olympic Torch Relay
    • Debut of PlantBottle: Made from up to 30% plant-based materials, 100% recyclable
    • 100% compostable beverage cups and lids
    • 800 Coca-Cola recycling barrels made from reused concentrate barrels deployed at Games and in each Olympic Torch Relay city
    • 1,400 proprietary EKOfresh refrigeration units eliminate direct greenhouse gas emissions and reduce energy use by 35% -- a North American first
    • 126 PET plastic bottles in each of the uniforms for all 600 Coca-Cola Olympic associates, totaling 75,600 recycled plastic bottles
    • Handed out over 1,00,000 Pennant Flags and over 250,000 Coca-Cola Glow Bottles
  • $350,000 invested to create outdoor sport court for inner-city Vancouver youth
  • 7,000 toques, scarves and vests made from the actual bottles collected at the Olympic venues to be provided to Vancouver’s Ray-Cam Community Centre residents
  • Over 200 Olympic athletes have now made pledges to personal sustainability and environmental actions and become environmental ambassadors
  • Displayed calories per serving on front of all packages for the first time ever - Packages will soon be available across the country

Olympic Torch Relay

  • More than 1 million applications to be a Coca-Cola Torchbearer
  • 4,500 Coca-Cola Torchbearers nominated by Red Ribbon Panel of health and environmental experts such as the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, ParticipACTION and WWF-Canada for making commitments to lead more active, green lifestyles
  • Over 10,000 youth inspired to get active through Coca-Cola’s partnership with Canada’s physical activity authority, ParticipACTION.
